About PSAC-NCR

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is one of Canada’s largest unions. PSAC is truly a national union with members from coast to coast to coast, in every province and territory. We even have an international face with members working abroad in embassies and consulates.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC)’s National Capital Region (NCR) represents more than 64, 000 members in 132 locals across Ottawa and the Outaouais.

Many of us work for the federal government, agencies and crown corporations. A growing number of us also work in the private and community services sectors. Our members support every aspect of life in both our nearby area and across the country.

This video explains how the Public Service Alliance of Canada works.

Affiliations

PSAC is an active member of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), Canada’s largest labour organization. The CLC brings together dozens of national and international unions, provincial and territorial federations of labour, and community-based labour councils to represent more than three million workers across the country.

PSAC-NCR is affiliated with the provincial Federations of Labour for Ontario (Ontario Federation of Labour) and Québec (Fédération de travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec). These Federations press the provincial legislatures for better laws on labour relations, workers’ compensation and social services, which are the province’s responsibilities.

PSAC-NCR also works with the District Labour Councils in our region. In Ottawa, it is the Ottawa and District Labour Council. In the Outaouais, it is the Conseil régional FTQ Outaouais. These councils are the voice of labour in the community. They help to bring union Locals and community allies together for the good of workers, their families and the communities they live and operate in.

PSAC NCR’s leadership

Members in the NCR Region are represented on the Alliance Executive Committee by the Regional Executive Vice-President (REVP) for the NCR. The REVP also chairs the NCR Regional Council. The regional council is a group of members elected to work with and give voice to members across the region. The REVP NCR is elected at the PSAC-NCR Triennial Convention. The current REVP for the NCR is Ruth Lau MacDonald.

Regional offices

The NCR has two regional offices. The Ottawa Regional Office is at Suite 603 at 233 Gilmour Street. The Gatineau Regional Office is at Suite 501 on the 5th floor at 60 Laval Suite. The staff at these offices support members by:

  • negotiating collective agreements
  • organizing new members
  • representing members at hearings
  • organizing strikes
  • offering union education
  • giving on-going advice and help to Locals and regional bodies

PSAC’s organizational structure

The PSAC is organized along regional lines. There are seven regions – Atlantic, Quebec, National Capital Region, Ontario, Prairies, British Columbia, and the North. Across the regions, staff from the 23 regional offices provide expertise and support to local officers and members.
