Gil’s Hootenanny 2026
May 1st, 2026, 7:00pm - 9:30pm
PSAC-NCR is proud to support Gil’s Hootenanny for their 17th and final year sharing songs of protest and hope with the Ottawa community.

Held each year on May Day, this annual celebration of the collective power of song to change the world was inspired by Gil, the founding Director of Research at the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), a great lover of folk music and a staunch supporter of folk musicians. Helen Levine, who died at 95 in October 2018, also considered herself an “old folkie”. Helen and Gil showed their love of folk music in many ways, including hosting annual hootenannies and May Day celebrations at their home for decades.
Gil’s Hootenanny will take place at 7:00 pm, Friday, May 1, at 30 Cleary Avenue, the campus of the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa. The venue is accessible, has ample parking and is serviced by OC Transpo.
Ken Whiteley, a prolific songwriter, gifted and versatile musician and powerful singer, will headline the 17th Annual and last Gil’s Hootenanny. Whiteley delights his audiences with his participatory humour, grace, and energy. His music communicates themes of freedom, love and social commentary, making him a perfect fit for the Gil’s Hootenanny’s sing-along concert format. Whitely will be accompanied by virtuoso bassist, Gord Mowat.
Tickets for Gil’s Hootenanny are $20 (plus fees). Kids are welcome to attend free of charge.
