Workers at Ottawa Airport vote overwhelmingly in favour of strike action

Workers of Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) — a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) — Local 70701 have voted in favour of a strike mandate. This definitive show of support for their negotiating team is a response to the Ottawa International Airport Authority refusing to present a reasonable offer to its workers.

These members do crucial work that keeps the airport running.

“Our members at the Ottawa Airport perform various roles to support travellers and airlines. Without their work, our national capital’s airport could not operate smoothly and without disruptions,” says Richard Thibert, Regional Vice-President for the UCTE National Capital Region (NCR).

Among other issues, members are fighting against proposed clawbacks to their health benefits. This is especially concerning because of the physical nature of their work. Other bargaining demands include wage increases that match the increase in cost of living.

“Job action is a decision taken very seriously by our membership, and it is always a last resort. This strong strike mandate from the members highlights the need for benefits and wages that aren’t currently reflected in the offers made by the Ottawa International Airport Authority,” says Ruth Lau MacDonald, PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President for the NCR. “We want the employer to come back to the table with an offer that reflects the value these workers bring to the Ottawa Airport.”
