PSAC has learned that, on November 6, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) served Best Theratronics Ltd with an order for failure to maintain a financial guarantee.
Best Theratronics manufactures medical devices. To do so, it must hold a license to operate a nuclear substance processing facility. In accordance with the regulations, the company must maintain a financial guarantee with the CNSC to ensure the future decommissioning of the facility, should the need arise. The CNSC has confirmed that Best Theratronics is not in compliance with this condition, and has not responded to a request for information on the status of the guarantee.
According to the order, Best Theratronics must cease operations until the CNSC approves the financial guarantee and accepts a plan for the safe resumption of operations.
PSAC and UNIFOR members at Best Theratronics have been on strike since May 10, 2024. From the outset, the employer has refused to come to the bargaining table and continues to block any attempt to resolve the dispute in good faith. And now we learn that the employer does not respect safety standards. By allowing this process to drag out for almost 200 days, the employer is only benefiting himself. He does not care about his staff. Our members deserve to work in a safe environment and for an employer who negotiates in good faith. PSAC will continue to support its members at Best Theratronics in the hope that this dispute will turn into a fair and equitable contract.
