Disability Employment Awareness Month

Statement by PSAC-NCR’s MDAC

The PSAC-NCR Members with Disabilities Action Committee (MDAC) observes Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) in October. DEAM takes place each October and was first celebrated in Canada in 2010 by the province of Manitoba. Since then, many other provinces and territories have also taken part. The month focuses on promoting inclusive hiring of persons with disabilities.

For those with disabilities wanting to join the workplace, there can be many barriers. They can occur throughout the hiring process including applications, interviews, onboarding and more. For those who are successful in finding work, there are often more obstacles to overcome once they’re in the workplace.

Karen Kenniphaas, Chair of MDAC, says:

Disability Employment Awareness Month is a time to recognize the challenges that many persons with disabilities face when seeking employment. During DEAM, the Executive of MDAC calls on employers to consider how their hiring processes may prevent persons with disabilities from becoming employed. We also call on employers to examine how they could better support employees with disabilities who are already in the workforce.

Any PSAC member with a disability or any member who identifies as an ally is encouraged to visit the MDAC webpage to learn more about the committee and get involved.
