When you fly out of Ottawa, you’re probably thinking about getting to the gate on time. Meanwhile, airport crews are keeping runways clear and making sure you can travel safely, even when the weather turns. They know what it takes to keep our airports running and deserve a say in their future.
What could privatization change?
The federal government is considering changes to airport ownership that could bring private investors into Canadian airports. Today, not-for-profit airport authorities reinvest airport revenues in operations and infrastructure.
Bringing in private investors raises some practical questions. Could travellers end up paying more? What protections would workers have for their jobs and working conditions? And how much say would the public have in how airports are run?
On October 26, airport workers and supporters rallied at Calgary International Airport to oppose privatization. PSAC-NCR supports the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) in its campaign to keep our airports serving the public.
